Family Planning Q & A

What is family planning?

Family planning is a group of services that helps you determine and implement your childbearing future. Through the family planning services at Arizona Women's Care, you and your partner can get the information, guidance, and support you need to plan your family in the best way for your situation.

What does family planning include?

At Arizona Women’s Care, family planning includes:

Birth control

You can choose from a wide variety of birth control options, from birth control pills that you take every day to intrauterine devices (IUD) that prevent pregnancy for years. If you’re positive that you don’t want children, you can choose a permanent birth control procedure such as laparoscopic tubal ligation.

Fertility support

About 10% of women struggle with infertility today. If you don’t conceive after trying for 12 months (6 months if you’re 35 or older), the Arizona Women’s Care team can diagnose the cause of your infertility.

In some cases, a treatable condition like fibroids or endometriosis causes infertility, and you can have a minimally invasive procedure to improve your chances of conception.

Genetic counseling and testing

If you’re at risk for pregnancy problems or complications, you may need genetic counseling. Counseling helps you learn about how inherited conditions could affect your baby and which tests you may need when pregnant. In addition, you may need various tests both before and during pregnancy to assess risk and screen for problems.

Preparing for pregnancy

You can do several things to prepare for a healthy pregnancy, such as taking prenatal vitamins, taking an omega-3 supplement, moderate exercise, and eating a healthy diet. The Arizona Women’s Care team can help you get as healthy as possible before pregnancy, which lays the foundation for a healthy baby.

When you’re pregnant, the caring team is there for you throughout the entire pregnancy, but family building services don’t stop there. You can make adjustments and changes to your birth control and other treatments based on how you want to build your family.

When should I see a doctor about family planning?

Family planning is important for all women of childbearing age, whether you never want kids or you’d love a whole house full. Because of that, Arizona Women’s Care includes a family planning discussion as part of annual well-woman exams.

If you decide to make any changes, like using a new method of birth control or trying to conceive a baby, book a family planning appointment to do it safely. Call Arizona Women’s Care or schedule an appointment online today.
